Indian summer sees stores double stocks of rosé wine and burger baps

Bring out the barbie: supermarkets gearing up for late summer rush

Supermarkets are taking a gamble on Britain’s Indian summer which is expected to remain until at least this weekend. By doubling rosé wine, burger baps and barbeque source stocks.

Temperatures soared to above 20C (68F) yesterday and are predicted to reach 28C by Saturday, with seaside resorts hoping a belated boost can partially make up low visitor numbers between the months June and August when the weather was miserable.

MeteoGroup forecaster Aisling Creevey said that the remainder of this week is likely to see constant sunshine, although both Northern Ireland and areas of western Scotland could experience heavy rain tomorrow and over the weekend. She added that the temperature will probably begin to fall a little next week, but they will remain slightly above average.

The recent improvement in the weather after largely dismal weather since May is likely to break September’s current record high of 27.8C several days in a row, with London expected to have the hottest periods. The warm break is similar to what has occurred during autumn in three of the past five years, although the Meteorological Office expects things will change soon after.

Forecasters of weather indicators predict that late autumn will be unusually cold followed by bitter winter months comparable to last year’s. Boots, scarves and sledges are therefore on the large retailers’ order lists, along with the last-ditch efforts to shift the summer stock.

Waitrose’s buying department’s Neil Whelpton said that the doubling-up of sausages, sauce, buns and wine had come at the same time as 50 per cent higher tonic water orders, 15 per cent more cider and beer and 80 per cent more burgers. He said that they’re preparing for the mini heatwave over the weekend by adding to the supplies.

The warmth has not been able to prevent flood alerts, a common feature of the British summer, which the Environment Agency posted for low-lying areas of the Devon and the north Cornwall coast because of out-of-the-ordinary high tides. The flood alert area included resorts like Perranporth and St Ives which are erecting their stalls in preparation for a busy few days.

The winners of a nationwide competition t design Britain’s best beach hut will be among those spending the weekend by the sea. Forty-two-year-old Julia Lee-Delisle will be present in her hut at West Wittering, West Sussex, near the one owned by Keith Richards. She purchased the plot in May last year and spent a full year decorating it.
