A journey for justice: murdered Indian student's father heads to the UK for answers

The father of Anuj Bidve, the 23-year-old Indian student who was murdered on Boxing Day in Salford, has cried out for justice, pleading with Britain to guarantee that foreign students see better protection in the future.

Anuj Bidve, who was an engineering student from western India, died after being shot in the head during a visit to Manchester. He was visiting the city with a group of fellow schoolmates from India.

Twenty-year-old Kiaran Stapleton of Ordsall has been put in custody and charged with his murder. Bidve’s mother and father arrived in the United Kingdom on Wednesday to retrieve their son’s body. On Thursday in Westminster, they met with Keith Vaz, who chairs the home affairs committee.

The family are planning to return to India at the end of the week, and are due to visit the murder scene in Ordsall Lane, Salford, on Friday morning. Candles and flowers have been placed by well-wishers, and earlier in the week, hundreds of town residents staged a vigil.

Standing outside parliament, Subhash, who is Bidve’s father, stated he hoped that no parent would ever have to endure such an ordeal. He said it was very unfortunate to have lost his son, adding that, as a father, he felt that this sort of situation should never happen again since many Indian students arrive in the UK for their education.

The father made a plea to the UK, asking the government and citizens to “all kindly do justice” for his son and ensure that those who travel to Britain for their studies can safely make it back to their home countries.

He described Anuj as a straightforward, disciplined and softly spoken young man who was friendly to everyone, calling him “a very good son”. He added that he wanted to give his son the best.

He said Anuj had been very content while studying for a postgraduate qualification in micro-electronics at Lancaster University, adding that his sudden death was a horrible loss to his field. He described his son as a great asset to India as well as the entire globe.

Keith Vaz announced his promise to the Bidves a full-length report on their son’s tragic death. He added that, as a parent himself, he could not imagine the amount of grief that his parents were suffering.

He said he understood that Mr and Mrs Bidves want to know what exactly happened. The couple were due to visit England in September for their son’s graduation ceremony. They never imagined they would arrive in circumstances of this nature. Vaz said that full information would offer the parents some closure.
