BAE Systems intends to cut 1400 jobs

by Harry Oldfield

BAE Systems announced it will cut 1,400 jobs across the UK. The cuts are thought to be a result of the government’s Spending Review.

Jobs are expected to be lost in Greater Manchester, Moray, Ayrshire, Lancashire, Somerset and Rutland.

The Spending Review contained numerous cutbacks on government spending. Among them are intentions to reduce defense funding by eight per cent over the next four years.

BAE currently provides maintenance to Nimrod surveillance planes and Harrier jets. Both of these programs will be scrapped as a result of the review.

Axing of the Nimrods will result in the closing of BAE’s operating site in Cheshire ahead of schedule.

The company previously announced its Woodford factory in Cheshire would be closing in December 2012. The site currently employs 630 people. A new date for its closure has yet to be announced.

The defense firm said it has been investigating the impacts the review would have on their operations. The company is now considering potential cuts in six of its sites and two RAF bases.

BAE defended its cuts saying that they were essential if the company were to remain competitive. It went on to say it would allow the firm to pursue alternative products, services and opportunities.

The Unite union, responsible for employees of BAE Systems, described the cuts as a tragedy to the workforce. It has urged the government to reconsider its review.

Keith Hazelwood, national officer of the GMB, said redeployment to related projects such as green and space technology would be essential.
