Google announces launch of Nexus S smartphone
by Natasha Redman
Google has announced the launch of its new smartphone, the Nexus S, which it hopes will perform better than its previous device, the Nexus One. The new phone will be manufactured by Samsung and is due to hit the shelves in the US and the UK before Christmas. The phones will be distributed in Britain by the Carphone Warehouse.
According to Google it was not the hardware which resulted in disappointing sales of the Nexus One, but distribution difficulties. Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, said mobile phones were important to the internet giant because of the widespread use of the Android operating system. The system is used by a number of Google smartphone competitors and currently owns 23.5 percent of the market in the states.
Google’s engineering manager, David Burke, said the Nexus One had suffered because of the firm’s internet only sales strategy.
The phone was originally launched in January this year, but Google halted distribution because the device was not performing as well as had been forecast. Burke added that users had been keen to get hold of the Nexus One but that distribution problems became a major hurdle.
CCS Insight’s managing director, Shaun Collins, said Google’s product was not to blame but the demands of distributing that product were too much for Google. The Nexus S will run Gingerbread, a newer version of the Android operating system. The handset will cost £549.99 when it is launched, or will come for free if attached to a £35 per month contract.
