9,000 jobs to be created by Tesco and Best Buy
by Adam Richards
US electrical goods firm Best Buys is set to create 8,000 jobs in the UK over the next five years.
Best Buys is the world’s largest consumer electronics retailer and will open its first UK outlets in Thurrock and Southampton this spring.
The news follows an announcement by Tesco that said it was planning to recruit another 1,000 staff for its banking and finance division.
However the move by the US giant represents a major assault on the UK high street.
Best Buy has a joint venture with Carphone Warehouse and plans to open about 70 stores over the next few years to tackle competition head-on.
Meanwhile, Tesco Bank is creating new jobs in Newcastle, after a decision to establish a customer service centre in the city.
Recruitment for the facility will commence early next year with initially 500 roles to be created by the end of 2010.
The new employees would be engaged in home and motor insurance sales as well as customer service, and a stem from Tesco Bank’s insurance partner, Fortis UK.
Chief executive for Tesco Bank, Benny Higgins, said that he was delighted to be announcing further jobs as they push ahead with their plans to build the Tesco Bank.
He concluded by saying that the North East of England had strong experience in customer services and the financial sector with a well-qualified and enthusiastic workforce.
