New scheme launched to encourage cycling to work
by Natasha Redman
A new scheme to encourage more employees to cycle to work has been launched with over 70 major companies signing up.
The employees, including hospitals and local authorities are pledging to implement the new cycle to work guarantee.
They have committed to their firms providing staff with safe bicycle storage and changing facilities.
Under the scheme, large organisations can also take advantage of a tax break which reduces the cost of cycling equipment and new bikes.
Lord Adonis, Transport Secretary, said that if proper facilities were more widely available, then he believed that more people would cycle to work.
He continued by saying that at present, only 3 percent of people cycled to work, and that number could be doubled or trebled with proper bike storage and changing facilities as well as safe cycle routes.
He also said that further benefits for employees could also be achieved as it is a great way to save money while getting fit.
