Tories get tough with the unemployed

by Adam Richards

The British government wants to deprive the unemployed of their allowances for 3 months if they refuse to take up work. The tightening of rules, combined with a workfare program for the unemployed, will put people back to work according to Prime Minister David Cameron.

The plan involves forcing the unemployed to perform work or risk seeing their benefits suspended. The plan will deprive the unemployed of 65 pounds (76 euros or 104 dollars) per week for three months if they refuse one job offer, six months if they refuse two, and three years they refuse three.

In Britain, 1.5 million of the 2.5 million unemployed receive 65 pounds a week. This allowance may be reduced or removed if they miss an appointment at a “job center” or if they refuse a job, but that penalty is rarely applied, according to the Tories.

The government says up to two million poor people should see their situation improve under their plans, which will cost £2 billion (2.3 billion euros or 3.2 billion dollars) in the next four years. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said it was the most radical overhaul of our social system since its creation.

The British trade union, Unite, warned against widespread poverty if benefits were removed in a time of rising unemployment.
