Freeview viewers must retune sets today
by Harry Oldfield
Users of Freeview will need to retune their set-top boxes and televisions on the 30th of September as the system is upgraded.
The upgrade is aimed to give more viewers access to channel Five.
But those who already have the channel Five service will be unable to watch it until they have retuned, as some older set top boxes will cease working completely
Other channels that will be affected include ITV3, ITV4, and some BBC radio stations. It is estimated that around 460,000 households will permanently lose access to ITV 3 and 4.
The changes behind the upgrade will allow for high-definition television (HDTV) to be broadcast on Freeview, and is now currently available on free-to-air satellite service.
Freeview managing director Ilse Howling said that the significant and necessary changes would immediately bring viewers new channels, introduce new homes to existing channels and prepare the platform for future availability.
All of the Freeview TV sets, set-top boxes and digital recorders will need to be retuned from lunchtime today, with the upgrade affecting about 18 million homes.
Set-top boxes that will no longer work include the Daewoo models DS608P and SV900, Labgear DTT100, Triax DVB2000T and Bush IDVCR01.
It is claimed that households with more than one television set are increasingly converting their second sets to receive digital networks as well.
By June 2009, 24.3m secondary televisions have already been digitally enabled according to a report.
There are currently over 60 million TV sets owned in the UK.
