Beatles remastering the charts
by Paul Russell
The Beatles are back as rulers of the marketplace, following the release of their remastered catalog and The Beatles: Rock Band.
The Wednesday releases have seen a huge demand, with the stereo and mono box sets priced at $260 and $299 disappearing off the shelves with dizzying alacrity.
Many outlets are already completely sold out. The sets grabbed first and second music best seller spots on Amazon, and with the site’s stock already sold out, new orders will have to wait for up to six weeks to be shipped. The band’s own website has reported “incredible demand”, and said new orders would only be shipped in late October.
With that pace, Billboard’s chart analyst, Keith Caulfield says the band stands a good chance to become the best-selling artist of the decade, overtaking Eminem’s 32 million record. The Beatles have sold 28 million albums since 2000, and have until December 31 to catch up.
The Beatles themed- Rock Band is helping to reinvigorate the music genre, says vice president of Game Crazy, Rob MacNaughton. He says the game appeals to several generations, providing video gaming with a broader exposure.
In America, enthusiastic crowds gathered at midnight launches at Best Buys in 10 cities. Sales are expected to pick up even more pace during the coming holidays.
MTV Networks Music Group president, Van Toffler says that while the launch targets gamers themselves, the second wave will be aimed at ‘gifters’, such as mothers buying for children and wives buying for husbands.
