Worcestershire man gets life for killing wife

by Sally Davies

A Worcestershire man has been sentenced to a life sentence for murdering his wife of 26 years. Jonathan Palmer, 52, was convicted of the murder of his wife Melinda, 57, by the Worcester Crown Court, which said the man will serve at least 18 years. According to testimony heard before the court, Mr Palmer had sent text messages to two mistresses on 22 December, the day of the killing.

Detective Chief Inspector Daryn Elton, of West Mercia Police, said that Mr Palmer’s life was full of lies and deceit, and the man has a complete disregard for other people. He went on to say that not only is he responsible for the murder of his wife, he is also responsible for the betrayal of two other women who he met through an online dating site, one of which was convinced that he loved her and they had a promising future together.

The defence for Mr Palmer argued that he did not care about either of the other women to whom he sent affectionate text messages, and that the relationship with his wife was the most important. Mr Palmer has denied murdering his wife since his arrest, and throughout the trial.
