Pipe bomb found by Strabane taxi driver

by Paul Russell

An alert taxi driver from Strabane who noticed a pipe bomb in an unattended vehicle decided to put the device in his cab and drive it to a remote area, according to police. Andy Gallagher saw the homemade bomb in a car that had its rear window smashed, and after transporting it away from a health centre to a field at Bradley Way, called the authorities, who evacuated the premises and dismantled the bomb.

Mr Gallagher said that when he looked into the vehicle, he saw a copper pipe with brass ends and a fuse in the middle. He also said that he figured the bomb would not go off without the fuse being lit, so he didn’t believe he put himself in any danger by picking up the device and driving it to a safe location.

This is the third time this week that an explosive device in Northern Ireland has caused disruption, although none of the bombs have gone off. On Monday, two primary schools in Antrim were evacuated after a student found a pipe bomb at the St Comgall’s Primary School Playground, and on Wednesday a device was found outside an unmanned police station in Crumlin, County Antrim.
