Cameron’s dad dies on holiday
by Sally Davies
David Cameron’s father, Ian Cameron, has passed away while on holiday with his wife in France. The 77-year-old suffered a stroke while in the middle of a two-week break in Toulon.
Mr Cameron, who was due to appear on Prime Minister’s Question Time today, cancelled his political arrangements and rushed to his father’s bedside after being phoned by his mother Mary at around 7:oo this morning. He met his brother and sister at London’s City Airport shortly after receiving the news.
According to Downing Street, the siblings were flown to their father’s bedside by helicopter once arriving in France by courtesy of French president Nicolas Sarkozy. A source close to the PM said he was extremely grateful to Sarkozy as otherwise he would not have been there in time to see his father before he passed.
Ian Cameron was blind in one eye and had both of his legs amputated after being born with a disability and undergoing various failed operations. He was, however, a successful stockbroker and acted as an inspiration to the family, according to the Camerons.
The PM’s dad had visited both Downing Street and Chequers before, but due to family holidays, he had not yet seen Cameron’s new baby daughter at the time of his passing. She was born just two weeks ago, also on a family holiday, this time in Cornwall.
