Possible P&O job cuts at Dover

by Natasha Redman

Ferry company P&O, which runs a cross-Channel service from Dover, has announced that it may be cutting 70 jobs to save cash. The travel firm announced the proposals on Wednesday which make up part of the latest measures in its money-making scheme.

The P&O head office at the Port of Dover, which employs 475 people, is said to be the target of most of the cuts. Shore based posts, such as IT, call centre workers and finance experts are believe to be most at risk.

The plans are an attempt by the company to compete against its ever increasing cross-Channel rivals, and P&O employees have been aware that organisational structures have been under review for some time. In a meeting this week, workers were told of the areas where the firm believes money can be saved.

P&O’s final-salary pension scheme is also said to be under review, a prospect that the travel union RMT is not too thrilled about. Steve Todd, the maritime secretary of RMT, described the news as a “kick in the teeth” for both workers at the Port of Dover and the UK ferry industry as a whole.

He added that the job cuts would have a long-term affect on the industry, along with the reduced services and privatisation that are becoming more common of late. Workers and union members will take part in a consultation on the plans which is due to start next week.
