Corrie character in drink drive arrest
by Harry Oldfield
A UK soap opera is sending a message to motorists by introducing a drink driving storyline for it Christmas special. Coronation street’s Carla Connor will be arrested in a episode for drink driving after being stopped by police as she leaves a festive get-together.
The businesswoman, who runs the street’s knickers factory, will be shown knocking back bubbly at the opening of Nick Tilsley’s new bar. The character, played by 37-year0old Alison King, is being used by the creators to show the dangers of drink driving over the festive period.
According to a source close to the show, Carla’s arrested will be portrayed in a sensitive manner to show how easy it is to fall foul of the law during the holiday season. The insider added that if the episode manages to stop just a handful of people driving home after one too many, they will have done a good job.
Carla will be shown being stopped by the cops and failing a breathalyser test after leaving the party. She will then be seen going to the police station and eventually having her licence taken away following a court appearance.
In previous episodes Carla is seen to be worried about turning into an alcoholic and vowing to stop drinking. After finding herself surrounded by loving couples at the opening of the bar, however, the lonely singleton turns to the bottle.
