Environmental trust fears luxury resort would destroy ancient forest

by Natasha Redman

A plan to build a luxury resort in Highland Perthshire is being met with concern regarding the potential impact on ancient woodland and area wildlife.

According to the Dall Estate and M James Developments, the development would mean the creation of hundreds of new jobs through the club members at Loch Rannoch.

A hotel, spa, two golf courses and houses are all part of the planned resort.

The Woodland Trust Scotland, however, has raised concerns that the construction would destroy part of the ancient Caledonian forest, and that populations of bats, black grouse, capercaillie, golden eagles and red squirrels could also be affected.

The environmental charity is making its objections to the plans known to Perth and Kinross Council.

Andrew Fairbairn, speaking on behalf of the Trust, said: “It is disappointing that, in this day and age, with so much more awareness of the importance of protecting the natural environment that a developer can propose something so damaging and ludicrous that would result in thousands of years of evolution being lost forever.”

He went on to say: “Ancient woodland is an irreplaceable habitat. We call on Perth and Kinross council to throw out this planning application, due to the totally unacceptable level of environmental vandalism it will cause, and to allow this fragment of the once great forest to remain.”
