Tube workers plan strike
by Harry Oldfield
Tube workers are planning a series of strikes on the London Underground, as recent discussions between union and management have failed. The Rail Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) announced that the first of the strikes is planned for Monday, with three more 24-hour work stoppages to occur over the next few months.
There will be as many as 10,000 employees expected to participate in the strikes, including maintenance staff, engineers, Tube drivers, and signallers. Although the RMT and representatives for the Transported Salaries Staffs Association (TSSA) met on Tuesday in order to come to an agreement, members of the union accused the management of the London Underground of undermining the talks by refusing to promise that redundancies would not be made.
According to Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT, London Underground management was well aware that any significant discussions could not be undertaken while there was still a looming threat of job cuts. He went on to add that because the redundancy threat was still an issue, talks between the two parties were unable to continue.
Howard Collins, chief operating officer for the London Underground, said that representatives for his group went to the talks with every intention of settling the matter. He went on to add that he expected the RMT to do the same.
