Girl suffers dog attack in Kilmarnock

by Sally Davies

A 10-year-old girl was taken to hospital and treated for facial lacerations sustained after being attacked by a dog in Kilmarnock. Toni Clannachan was playing with a friend in a garden when she was attacked by a Japanese Akita and bitten in the face, which resulted in her receiving over 100 stitches in order to close the wounds, according to hospital officials.

A spokesperson for Strathclyde Police said that the incident occurred at 16:40 BST on 31 August, after which the 10-year-old was rushed to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.  The spokesperson went on to add that the injuries the girl received were not life threatening, and she is currently in stable condition.

The girl’s father, John Dixon, told the Daily Record newspaper that this particular breed of dog, the Japanese Akita, should not be allowed near families and children, as they are killing machines. He went on to add that if the dog had bitten his daughter an inch lower, it could have severed an artery in her neck, which most likely would have killed her.

The latest dog attack is the second in Scotland this week, as Rhianna Kidd, also aged 10, was attacked while riding her bicycle in Dundee. The girl had to have emergency surgery to treat a fractured jaw, and she also had plastic surgery to restore the damage done to her face as a result of the attack.
