UK police complaint figures released

by Natasha Redman

Data for the number of complaints issued by UK citizens against local law enforcement officials has been released through a Freedom of Information request made by the BBC. According to the statistics, 5,000 complaints were made against police officers in 2009 to 2010, with at least 2,000 individual officers receiving two or three complaints by members of the general public.

The data comes from 43 of the 52 UK forces, with Northern Ireland, West Mercia, and Lincolnshire receiving the largest number of complaints per officer. The Police Federation responded to the figures through a representative who said that many of the cases were unsubstantiated, and that local law enforcement officials have extremely difficult jobs, which they perform in difficult circumstances.

The information gleaned through the Freedom of Information request also showed that most complaints had to do with rudeness, assault, or a failure of duty by officers. In addition, it was found that the force with the most officers with three or more complaints issued against them was the Police Service of Northern Ireland, which had 376 during the year. The officer who received the most complaints is part of the Dyfed-Powys police force, and had a whopping 40 allegations made against him during the year.
