Sony challenges iTunes with new download service
by Harry Oldfield
Sony has released a new music and video download service, which the firm hopes will compete with Apple’s highly successful iTunes software. Sony made the announcement in Berlin at the recent IFA technology fair, and according to a spokesperson, the service will allow users of PlayStation 3s, Bravia TVs, Blue-Ray players, and Sony PCs to download movies and music through Qriocity and Music Unlimited.
Priority, the video program, has been offering video on-demand since earlier this year for US-based customers and will now be available for users throughout Europe. Sony announced that the Music Unlimited service will be launched world-wide later this year.
This is the second time that Sony has tried to enter the highly competitive music download market, as it released Connect in 2004, although that program was unsuccessful. The Japanese-based technology giant hopes that the second time around will prove more profitable, and according to Fujio Nishida, president of Sony Europe, music and video are only the start of potential downloads through Qriocity. Mr Nishida said that game applications and e-books will also be available through the new software.
