Apple unveils social networking site Ping
by Adam Richards
Apple has unveiled its latest technological offering, a social networking site named Ping, which is all about music, according to company co-founder and current chief executive Steve Jobs. Ping, an extension of the highly popular iTunes software package, allows users to connect with their friends and collaborate on all things musical, not unlike the way people all over the world connect using Twitter.
Mr Jobs said that he and his fellow Apple employees believe that Ping can be an instant success, as over 160 million people can start using it immediately with the latest version of iTunes software, downloadable from the Apple web site. The Apple chief went on to say that the firm hopes Ping will contribute to the astronomical success of iTunes, which has already seen a whopping 12 billion music downloads since its launch.
Many expert analysts believe that the release of Ping will pose significant threats to other social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Michael Gartenberg of Altimeter told BBC News that MySpace is particularly at risk of falling by the wayside with the release of Ping. He went on to add that MySpace and the other social networking sites will have to find some way to differentiate themselves musically, as Apple now has an incredibly dominant position in the industry with the debut of Ping.
