Study shows Brits willing to suffer sunburn for tan
by Harry Oldfield
A recent study has shown that among the nearly 50 per cent of Britons who received a sunburn this year, one-third were catching some rays in order to get a tan. The poll of 2,000 individuals by Cancer Research UK and Superdrug showed that 46 per cent of the populace received a sunburn at some point over the summer, and one-third of all respondents said they would risk getting sunburned again in order to get the tan they are looking for.
According to Ed Yong of Cancer Research UK, the startling numbers show that UK residents don’t take the risk inherent in staying out in the sun too long seriously enough, as getting sunburn once every two years can triple the risk of getting melanoma. He went on to add that if people choose to go out in the sun, they should always take care to put on sunscreen, and make sure not to stay outside unprotected for too long.
The survey found that the face is the most common part of the body to get sunburned, with 40 per cent of those questioned acknowledging they had become red-faced after spending too much time outside. The arms, shoulders, and neck were the next most common areas to get sunburned, at 39 per cent, 37 per cent, and 36 per cent, respectively.
