Notting Hill Carnival a Bank Holiday success
by Sally Davies
Hundreds of thousands of Britons participated in the 45th Notting Hill Carnival, an event which has become the largest street festival in the European Union since its humble beginnings in 1966. Even though part of the festival was marred by rainfall on Sunday afternoon, the two-day event was considered a rousing success by the many who turned out to see the many costumes and floats in the parade which began at 09:00 BST on Sunday morning.
Ancil Barclay, director of the Notting Hill Carnival 2010, said that although there was a bit of rainfall during the afternoon hours on Sunday, the atmosphere surrounding the event was electric all day long. He went on to say that this year’s offerings of costumes and floats that paraded through the streets were among the best he has ever seen, and considers the event to be one of the most successful in its 45-year history.
London Mayor Boris Johnson also had only good things to say about this year’s Notting Hill Carnival, and said that the event represents the rich culture and tradition inherent in Caribbean life, and the annual celebration is an event which everyone looks forward to all year. Mayor Johnson also said that because he is a former Ladbroke Grove resident, he has a special place in his heart for the Notting Hill Carnival, and that there is nothing he can think of which rivals the spirit and energy which comes out at the festival each Bank Holiday Weekend.
