Met Office changes direction on summer forecast for Britain

by Paul Russell

It appears that the rainy, gloomy weather is set to continue throughout the summer in Britain, meaning that increasing numbers of holidaymakers are looking for a way to escape to the sun without “breaking the bank”.

Earlier this week the Met Office made it official, admitting that its earlier prediction for a hot and sunny summer was wrong, and that instead of a “barbeque summer”, there will be rain, followed by cloudy skies and more gloomy weather.

So, in the end this has turned into a typical British summer, and now that the Met Office has acknowledged this, tons of holidaymakers are looking for deals on holidays abroad where they can be sure of sunshine.

Given the current recession, many Britons made plans for a “staycation” this year – taking their holiday at home or close to home rather than booking a break abroad, in order to save money. For those that have stayed in Britain, it’s meant getting soaked at holiday camps or by the sea.

For those who have decided to head to foreign destinations, there is some good news. The pound has been recovering in recent months and is now stronger against the US dollar, by 15 per cent, and by 10 per cent against the euro and Turkish lire.

Travel experts are saying that the more favourable currency exchange rate will make the pound go further on a holiday abroad, meaning that the cost of that foreign break may not be prohibitive.
