Staycations also call for travel insurance
by Adam Richards
Although more than 12 million Britons are staying closer to home this summer to save money on holiday costs, they are being warned by travel insurers against cutting travel cover.
With the UK economy still in recession and the pound continuing its weakness against the euro, many British holidaymakers are forgoing this year’s summer holiday abroad. Those who choose a “staycation” instead face the same travel risks they would if travelling overseas, however. Domestic flights are as likely to be cancelled as flights abroad, and damage and theft to belongings is also a potential problem in the UK.
Maxine Baker, travel insurance manager at Moneysupermarket.com, said: “Many Brits may not even consider taking out travel insurance. However, it may be worth considering, especially if they are flying within the UK or taking expensive possessions with them.”
Forty per cent of Britons have indicated that, for financial reasons, they will be taking their main holiday in the UK this summer, travel insurer Liverpool Victoria (LV) said.
John O’Roarke, the managing director of travel insurance at LV, commented: “It’s not surprising that holidaymakers are thinking twice about spending their hard-earned wages on expensive overseas holidays. However, UK holidaymakers should remember that travel insurance is still important.”
