New Zealand venue bans vuvuzelas
by Natasha Redman
Officials at Eden Park stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, have banned fans from bringing vuvuzelas into the venue for the Tri-nation opener against South Africa this weekend. Vuvuzelas have received much publicity in the past month, as the loud horns have been heard throughout football matches in South Africa for this year’s World Cup. The ban on the horns has led many to speculate that it is a prelude to prohibiting vuvuzelas from being allowed at all during the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
According to David Kennedy, chief executive of Eden Park, he believes it to be a judgement call on whether or not to allow certain objects into a particular stadium. He went on to add that for this particular match, any of the 25,000 spectators who show up for the game with vuvuzelas will see the horn confiscated before they are allowed entry.
Bryan Pearson, Eden Park venue management chief executive, said that the ban of vuvuzelas will be good for the stadium as well as the fans. He added that he doesn’t believe the constant backdrop of horns during a Rugby match is something fans want as part of their experience of going to the stadium. Officials at Eden Park are not the only ones to prevent vuvuzelas into its arena, as Wimbledon staff also prohibited fans from bringing horns into their stadium during the 2010 event.
