Hamleys predicts top toys
by Katie Naylor
UK toy store Hamleys released its annual predictions last week as the company attempts to forecast the top selling toys during 2010, the majority of which will be sold over the Christmas holidays. Most of the list is composed of pricey hi-tech items, with Stinky the Garbage Truck, the machine that eats cars, sings, and dances, retailing at £82 and holding the number one spot.
Hamleys expects the £75 Vtech Kidizoom video camera to be another popular product, as well as the £35 Turbo Twister, a remote-controlled auto with flashing lights. For those parents who want to shell out for one of the higher-priced remote-controlled cars, the small-scale Mercedes Benz SLS AMG will run a whopping £1,500.
There are some old favourites that made this year’s list, including the Buzz Lightyear Jet Pack, which offers afterburner jet lights and sounds, to coincide with this year’s release of the new Pixar release, Toy Story 3. Barbie is also on the list, with this year’s model being adorned with a functional video camera inside her necklace, as well as a LCD screen on her back.
According to Laura Olver, spokesperson for Hamleys, hi-tech toys are the trend this year, as children seem to want all the noises, bells, and whistles they can get. She went on to say that other traditional items, such as Legos, will most likely be popular sellers as well.
