Waitrose, the UK’s up-market supermarket chain, is expanding its operations in Scotland with the opening of its first Glasgow store.
The retailer currently has two branches in the country, both of which are in Edinburgh, and were acquired in 2006 from Somerfield.
Located in an existing Somerfield store in Byres Road, the new Glasgow Waitrose will open by November.
The 70 employees at Somerfield in Glasgow will be offered positions at Waitrose, and another 50 jobs will also be created, the company revealed.
Mark Price, the managing director of Waitrose, said: “We are delighted to be coming to Glasgow. We have wanted to bring Waitrose here for a long time and in Byres Road we are confident we have found a location that will allow us to trade successfully.”
He added: “Our objective is always to make a long-lasting positive contribution to any area in which we trade and we look forward to serving our new Glasgow customers.”
The John Lewis Partnership owns the supermarket chain, which has its employees involved in the running of the business and receiving a share in the profits.
