McShane attackers charged with attempted murder

by Sally Davies

The two suspects held by Chicago Police in the attack of Silverbridge native Natasha McShane are now charged with attempted murder. Heriberto Viramontes and Marcy Cruz had previously been charged with aggravated battery and armed robbery for the incident when they brutally beat McShane and her friend, Stacey Jurich, with a baseball bat last month during a robbery in the Bucktown District.

According to prosecutors, Viramontes was in need of money to support his drug habit when he went to the usually safe Chicago neighbourhood looking for potential victims. Cruz allegedly drove the van they were travelling in and waiting inside as Viramontes hit both McShane and Jurich in the head and back with the weapon. The two left the women for dead as they took their money and valuables with them as they fled the scene. Although injured, Jurich was able to hail a passing taxi for assistance and the two were rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Jurich is now home, although McShane is currently in a rehabilitation centre in Chicago after spending almost two weeks in a drug-induced coma. Although conscious, she now has limited brain activity and remains in serious condition. McShane’s family, including her parents, grandmother, and sister, flew over from Northern Ireland in the days following the attack.
