Marks and Spencer at top of worst packaging list

Over the past two years, UK retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) has run a high-profile environmental campaign, but it recently found itself ranked as the supermarket having the worst packaging, according to a report in the Telegraph.
While M&S has made major improvements in its green credentials, it still lags behind Tesco, Sainsbury’s, ASDA, Waitrose and Morrisons in the packaging area, according to the results of a new Which? packaging study.
In May, however, M&S reported that it had reduced the use of disposable food carrier bags by 83 per cent, from 464 million bags to 77 million. In addition, the supermarket chain reported recycling approximately 3.7 million two-liter bottles to produce polyester used in its bedding, homeware, garments and re-usable carrier bags.
The study found that M&S used packaging for bacon, ice cream and mushrooms that was heavier than that used by rivals. The packaging, including labels, weighed a total of 415g, while Sainsbury’s was the lightest at 369g. Tesco’s comparable packaging weighed 370g, according to the Telegraph report.
It was concluded by the study that manufacturers and supermarkets need to do more in order to reduce excess packaging – although supermarkets are saying that some of the packaging, such as the plastic used to wrap cucumbers, extends shelf life.
