Woolworths revived as online business

Woolworths, which went out of business earlier this year, is being revived online this week by Shop Direct, the largest home shopping retailer in Britain. The 100-year-old variety retailer will become an Internet-only business.
Woolworths.co.uk will comprise a main shop that sells toys and clothing for children, an entertainment shop featuring CDs, DVDs and video games and a party goods outlet that offers fancy dress costumes, games and “click n’ mix”, which is the new name for the retailer’s iconic “pic n’ mix” sweets.
Matthew Hardcastle, the head of Woolworths, commented about the launch of the new online business in an interview with Reuters: “There has been a vacuum created by Woolworths’ disappearance, especially in the entertainment, toys and party areas.”
He added: “This venture is firmly focused on the family and will enable people to find everything under one roof but because it is now online we’ll be able to sell bulkier things and more products than you could get in a bricks and mortar store.”
Shop Direct, owned by brothers David and Frederick Barclay, trades under brands that include Littlewoods and Kays. It has also acquired the Woolworths Ladybird childrenswear brand.
