Natasha McShane comes out of coma in Chicago
by Sally Davies
Irish student Natasha McShane has come out of a coma for the first time since she was brutally beaten with an aluminium baseball bat in Chicago on 23 April. The 23-year-old was walking in the Bucktown District with her friend Stacey Jurich after a party celebrating McShane’s graduation from a Chicago university when the attack occurred.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital issued a statement which said that she remains in serious condition and is showing limited brain activity. Doctors also announced that they have taken steps to relieve pressure in her brain, which suffered severe damage during the attack, and hope that the next few days will show improvement in what they call uncontrolled body movements.
McShane’s, hailing from Silverbridge, has received tremendous support from her friends and family in Northern Ireland, as well as the many Chicagoans who have held numerous vigils and benefits in her honour. Her parents, grandmother and sister flew over to be at her bedside within a few days of the attack.
Heriberto Viramontes, 30, and his girlfriend Mary Cruz, are currently remanded for the crime and are awaiting trial in Cook County Jail. The two are charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery. Viramontes has a long record of trouble with the Chicago police, who said that he has a 13-page rap sheet with over 30 arrests and multiple convictions.

"The hopes and prayers of millions of Americans are with you, Natasha. We deeply regret that our legal system allows predators with multiple convictions for serious crimes to roam free on the street."
