Guards stood outside the gates of a new shopping centre, located a half-hour’s drive east of the German capital last week, for the opening of a concept in shopping new to the country – a designer outlet.
Resembling a village in the German countryside, the Berlin Designer Outlet Centre is the most recent of the new type of shopping centre to open on the continent, showing that although the broader retail industry is plagued by decreased consumer spending and tenant insolvencies, the outlet segment is growing.
In 2008, there were 160 outlets in Europe, an increase over the 143 in 2007, More openings are planned for this year, with the number expected to rise to 190, according to London property consultancy GVA Grimley, which specializes in the outlet shopping sector.
Despite the economic climate, experts claim that as many as 67 new outlet centres are planned for Europe over the next three years, with some in the planning stage at this time. In Germany, the largest of Europe’s economies, there are just five outlets now, but 11 more centres are planned.
Gary Bond, the McArthurGlen Group’s chief executive, said: “We are looking at further opportunities in Germany,” adding: “Germany has just a tenth of the outlet space as the U.K. There is a lot of room for growth.”
