Clothing and footwear retailers hit as sales drop

Last month, clothing and footwear shop owners felt the pressure as retail sales fell, the latest figures have indicated.
Between April and May, retail sales volumes declined by 0.6 per cent, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
For the three-month period ended 31 May, sales figures were up by 0.6 per cent over the same period last year. This is the lowest growth rate reported since December of 1995.
Clothing and footwear retailers saw sales decline by 1.9 per cent in May, over the prior month, while “other” stores, such as photography and sports shops, saw a drop in sales of three per cent.
Fears that recovery in the retail sector was still not in sight, the pound fell further against both the US dollar and the euro.
Caroline Buckner, the Barclays Commercial Bank retail sector specialist for Wales, noted: “Retail sales are in a holding pattern. With a slight fall in May and growth in the past three months compared to a year earlier continuing to slow, expectations of a positive increase this month have not been met.”
She added: “However, looking at the numbers over the past nine months evidence suggests that retail sales numbers are moving sideways. There are encouraging signs that this will keep having a positive effect later into the year and will ease many concerns of operating under over-cautious expectations.”
