McShane benefit scheduled in Chicago
by Sally Davies
A benefit for Natasha McShane and Stacey Jurich has been scheduled in Chicago, the site of a brutal baseball attack on the two women on 23 April. McShane and Jurich were robbed and beaten when they were returning home after a celebratory party in honour of McShane’s graduation from university. McShane, from Silverbridge, Ireland, sustained severe head injuries during the attack. She is currently in critical but stable condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The attack led to an outpouring of support from Chicago residents, who have scheduled a benefit to raise money for McShane at Local 339 Union Hall on 4 June. There will also be a fundraising event this week at Cans Bar, where Jurich had worked prior to the attack.
Heriberto Viramontes, 30, and his girlfriend Marcy Cruz, have been arrested for the attack, and are currently remanded in Cook County Jail awaiting trial. The two are charged with battery and armed robbery. According to Chicago police, Viramontes has a long history of being in trouble with the law with a 13-page rap sheet and over 30 arrests.
Jurich’s father, Pete, told Chicago reporters that the support from the community has been overwhelming, and both his and the McShane family appreciate the love they are receiving from the many Chicagoans who are keeping McShane and Jurich in their prayers. He went on to say that the empathy shown by the Irish Community in Chicago, as well as those with no affiliation with Ireland, has been tremendous.
