When Apple’s new iPhone 3G S went on sale in the UK on 19 June, there were queues of as many as hundreds of eager consumers outside Apple, Carphone Warehouse and O2 stores.
Carphone stores opened at 7:30am, having gotten a half-hour exclusive on the release. It was the only UK retailer offering a discount on the new device. Those trading in their old iPhone 3G received up to £180 off. Apple and O2 opened their doors at 8:02am.
On Regent Street in London, the Apple flagship store attracted the biggest crowds and the most attention, as representatives from national media outlets joined die-hard fans waiting for the store to open.
The Oxford street O2 branches had large numbers of customers waiting outside as well – particularly the Bond Street station branch, where customers were still queuing outside an hour after the store opened.
Carphone stores on Oxford Street, however, were not as busy, although there was good footfall for the 7:30am opening, according to staff.
At O2, shoppers can buy the new handset on an 18- or 24-month plan, with the 16GB model ranging in cost from free to £184.98, depending on the type of plan chosen; and the 32GB model is offered at £96.89 or £274.23.
Prepaid handsets are available at £440.40 for the 16GB model, and at £538.30 for the 32GB version.
