McShane opens eyes ten days after attack in Chicago

by Harry Oldfield

Natasha McShane briefly opened her eyes on Saturday, ten days after being brutally beaten with a baseball bat in the Chicago neighbourhood of Bucktown. The 23-year-old student from Silverbridge has been in a drug-induced coma since the incident. Her parents, Liam and Sheila, at her bedside at the time of their daughter’s eye-movements, are encouraged by the change and hopeful that the next few days will bring more good news.

McShane and her friend, Stacy Jurich, were returning home the night of 3 April after attending a party in celebration of McShane’s graduation from university. The two were robbed by a man wielding a baseball bat, after which a woman drove the two offenders away in a van. Heriberto Viramontes, 31, and his girlfriend Mary Cruz, 25, were arrested for the attack and charged with aggravated battery and armed robbery. The two are currently remanded in Cook County Jail awaiting trial.

McShane’s parents and grandmother flew to Chicago from Northern Ireland after the incident occurred, and were recently joined by Carla, Natasha’s sister. Carla said it was very difficult to be away from the family during the past week, and is extremely thankful that she was able to arrive on Sunday. She went on to say that she and the rest of her family were very grateful to the many Chicago natives who have demonstrated an outpouring of support since the night of the attack.
