The premises of the former Woolworths store in Nailsea are now home to a discount store that is reporting brisk business.
When The Original Factory Shop opened one day ahead of schedule, hundreds of local shoppers passed through its doors.
Occupying 8,100 square feet, the space was completely refitted after Woolworths left in January of this year.
The Factory Shop stocks a wide range of items, including clothing for men, women and children, DVDs, electricals, garden equipment, handbags, homewares and shoes.
Several ex-Woolworths employees are working the tills after being hired by the new High Street store.
Joanne Vick, a 36-year-old mother of three from Nailsea, used to work as a Woolworths sales assistant at the store in town before it closed.
Vick said: “It’s great to be back at work as I was unemployed for a while after losing my job at Woolworths. Four of us that used to work for Woolworths have now got new jobs here. I am really glad this job came along and that this store has opened because we already have a number of empty shops in the town. The customers are really happy that a store like this has opened in Nailsea.”
The Original Factory Shop chain is based in North West England, and has 100 stores in locations across the UK – including one at Ilfracombe and one at Minehead.
