According to a new study conducted by e-business sales consultancy Logan Tod, consumers in the UK are planning to spend more of their shopping money online in 2009 than in any year before.

The figures indicate that the reason for this growth in online spending is the desire of consumers to save money in the current economic downturn, as value for money is listed as a top priority, particularly in making important purchases.

In the company’s third yearly Online Shopping Index, which provides data on consumer online shopping, it was shown that 65 per cent of UK consumers say they will increase the amount of shopping they do online in the next 12 months – a welcome finding for struggling retailers.

Those who are 45 and older are driving this trend. Of those in this age bracket who responded to the survey questions, 65 per cent said they would increase online spending by a minimum of 10 per cent in 2009.

As over-45 consumers become more comfortable with the Internet and making purchases online, they realise that there are good values available online and are beginning to take advantage of available discounts.
