Legal High drug ban urged

by Adam Richards

Pressure is mounting for a ban of the legal high drug mephedrone after it has been connected with the deaths of two teenagers.

Authorities have said that they believe the drug, which has become popular on the club scene, contributed to the deaths of Louis Wainwright, 18 and Nicholas Smith, 19.  The two passed away on Monday following a night out in Scunthorpe.

Following police recommendations for anyone who had taken the drug to go to hospital, teaching leaders said that mephedrone was as dangerous as Class A substances like heroin and cocaine and the government should seriously consider banning it.

General secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, Mick Brooks said that the drug had the same inherent dangers as any Class A drug and believes that serious consideration should be given to banning it.

He went on to say that the problem is that when the people take it are criminalised, so much thought must be placed into what is done.

Police are currently interviewing three people over the deaths of the two teenagers who died within only a few hours of each other.

Father of the Nicholas, Tony, issued a warning to youngsters to avoid the drug, which is known by various names such as M-CAT, MC and meow.

He said that the family didn’t know much about what happened, however they believe that he’s been taking the drug on a night out.  He went on to say that he didn’t want his son to be labelled as a druggie, and was just on a night out with friends.

Police are interviewing a 26 year old man, a 20 year old and a 17 year old boy in connection with the deaths.  One of the arrested men was taken to hospital after being understood to have taken the drugs. He was released into custody with no symptoms.
