70 per cent of BA flights to operate despite strike

by Sally Davies

Britain’s national airline, British Airways is expected to reveal which flights may be cancelled due to an upcoming strike by cabin crew expected next weekend.

The airline’s cabin crew are striking over pay cuts and reductions in staffing levels at the airlines, with the initial stop-work to take place on the 20th of March.

Meanwhile, a source at Downing Street would not confirm or deny reports that Prime Minister Gordon Brown had held discussions with the union representing the flight attendants, Unite.

It has been widely reported that the PM phoned the general secretary of the union to discuss possible solutions to the matter.

The strike is anticipated to last for three days, with a second strike lasting for four days expected to begin on the 27th of March.

The announcement, due to occur this afternoon, will give hundreds of thousands of travellers the opportunity to make an informed decision on alternative travel arrangements.

The airline is currently insisting that a total of 70 per cent of all flights will continue to operate, with most of the cancellations likely to take place on domestic or short haul flights.

British Airways has also claimed that it would be operating at least 23 aircraft with trained replacement crew made up with staff from other areas of the airline.

It has also been reported that PM Gordon Brown has weighed in on the dispute by making a phone call over the weekend to joint general secretary of the union, Tony Woodley.

However a spokesperson at Downing Street could not confirm or deny the claims, saying that he did not want to offer a running commentary on the situation.
