NHS hospital parking causes stress
by Adam Richards
A new report has revealed that expensive and crowded NHS hospital car parks add to the stress of hospital visits for over fifty per cent of all users.
A consumer watchdog said that problems finding a space, cost and battling confusing payment methods are among the problems facing hospital visitors.
A survey found that 67 per cent of those who had used a NHS hospital car park in the last two years believed that charges were too expensive.
52 per cent of visitors had problems in finding a space and a third had to queue or wait to park. Once they had found a spac, 33 per cent faced even more difficulties in attempting to pay the charges.
The poll found that 70 per cent of all people had experience some form of problem with parking and 49 per cent said that the difficulties had made their visit more stressful.
Previous results have shown that some hospitals make millions of pounds of profits each year from car park fees.
The survey was conducted as part of a response to the Department of Health’s consultation on NHS car parking.
Chief executive of Which?, who carried out the survey, said that it was outrageous that using an NHS hospital car park was so problematic for many people. Visiting a hospital is a stressful experience enough for most people and they do not need the added burden of battling with the parking system.
