BNP awaits ruling on memberships
by Natasha Redman
The far right wing British National Party (BNP) is to find out today if the decision to scrap its whites-only membership policy is enough to meet race relations regulations.
Last month, the party voted to approve changes to allow Asian and black people to become members.
The vote came after the threat of a possible court injunction over its whites-only membership by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).
During a day of legal submissions on Tuesday, the BNP had been accused of discriminating against black and Asian people even though the party longer bars them from joining. The BNP denied the allegations and said that it had a waiting list of black and Asian people and is open to further applications from ethnic minorities.
A judgment is expected today at the Central London County Court on the legality of the new constitution.
Following the change in constitution, millionaire Asian businessman Mo Chaudry said that he would join the party to fight them from inside, however he was later informed that his application would be blocked.
Mr Chaudry said that he is hoping that the court would take a robust approach and question the real intent of the constitution. They have no real intention of allowing people like him into the fold, and it was just a camouflage to appease the system.
He runs a string of businesses around Stoke on Trent , which has eight BNP members on its council.
