Vodafone to cut almost 400 jobs
by Natasha Redman
Telecommunications giant Vodafone has announced it is slashing 375 jobs across its business from March, with the company saying that the majority of roles affected would be primarily back office positions including its UK headquarters in Newbury, Berkshire.
The company said it would also take on a further 170 new staff in customer-facing roles.
Union, Prospect, condemned Vodafone for the lack of consultation and said that it was disappointed to learn of the news from the media, not the company.
A spokesman for the union said that this was a disgraceful way to treat employees, particularly those very long serving and loyal members of staff who had been with Vodafone from the early days and had made the company a success.
HR Director of Vodafone UK, Matthew Brearley, said that the company was committed to increasing the number of customer facing employees which would help them simplify their business and continue to deliver outstanding communications services across the UK’s best network.
The company will also hire a total of 50 graduates to start in September from more than 3,000 who have applied to its UK graduate programme.
