Bali bombing suspect dead in raid
A high ranking militant in Southeast Asia which is wanted by authorities for planning the deadliest attack in the history of Indonesia has been killed in a shootout with police, president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono confirmed today.
Dulmatin, 39, was trained by al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, and was wanted for the suicide bombing that ripped through two popular Balinese nightclubs in 2002, killing 202 people.
He has been one of the most wanted fugitives in Southeast Asia and was originally believed to have fled to the Philippines.
President Yudhoyono said during a speech in the Australian capital of Canberra today that confirmed Dulmatin was one of the three suspected militants killed in two coordinated raids the day before in the outskirts of Jakarta.
In the speech, he praised the efforts of police and anti-terrorist forces, confirming that one of the top Southeast Asian terrorists had been killed.
He went on to say that Indonesia was engaged in relentless fight against terrorism, and that Indonesian authorities would continue to hunt them down and do all they could to prevent them from harming their people.
Eliminating the alleged master bomb maker of the Jemaah Islamiyah militant group, an offshoot of al-Qaeda, will be seen as a major accomplishment for Indonesia’s security forces ahead of the first major visit by US President Barack Obama next week.
It is not clear whether anyone is eligible for the $10 million reward offered by the US government for Dulmatin.
