Continental jumps on the bandwagon to charge for extra legroom
by Paul Russell
The 4th largest airline in the US, Continental, has announced that it will charge customers for seats with additional legroom on worldwide flights commencing on the 17th of March.
The additional cost would depend on a number of factors, including the length of a flight and competition from other airlines within the market, according to a spokeswoman for the airline.
For a one way flight from London to the US, the airline has disclosed that customers could end up paying an additional $US99, but with market demand that price could be set to jump even higher.
The spokeswoman said that the date and time of a flight could also allow for a change in price for the extra-roomy seats.
The option to purchase extra legroom would be available upon check in for flights. The airline said that passengers could check in 24 hours prior to departure time.
Members of the Continental frequent flyer programme could still book the seats at no additional charge, with Platinum and gold members having the option of booking the seat when they make their reservations.
Platinum members usually fly 75,000 miles a year, while gold members fly 50,000 miles a year. Silver members, who fly about 25,000 miles a year could book the seats at check in.
The announcement comes after a decision by Virgin Atlantic to offer passengers the opportunity to pay an extra supplement to be seated in an exit row.
