Pakistani police closing in on kidnappers
by Paul Russell
Pakistani police are moving in on the kidnappers of a five-year-old British child, according to the country’s Interior Minister, Rehman Malik.
Sahil Saeed, from Oldham, was abducted by armed robbers on Wednesday while he was visiting relatives with his father.
Four police officers in Pakistan have also been suspended over the manner in which the kidnap was handled.
Authorities initially did not respond to the family’s emergency phone cal to ‘Rescue 15’, Pakistan’s equivalent of 99.
Mr Malik said that Sahil had been taken by someone close to the family.
He told reporters that there was somebody close to the family because of the way the situation had happened, the way the abduction took place, the way the entry had been made, the way the conduct was done during the whole operation.
Malik said that there had been certain leads which he was not prepared to discuss, but warned the abductors to leave the boy because the police were near to them.
He went on to say that the kidnapping was humiliating for Pakistan and the captors would be made an example of.
Sahil had been taken from his grandmother’s house in the Punjab city of Jhelum as he was preparing to take a taxi to the airport for his return flight to the UK.
It is believed that the attackers have demanded a £100,000 ransom for his return.
Sahil’s mother pleased for his safe return on Saturday, saying that she would forgive the captors if they released him.
She also went on to say that Sahil had never been apart from herself of her husband.
