Conservatives lead drops by 5 points

by Paul Russell

A new poll has revealed that Labour could be on track to win more seats than the Tories at the upcoming general election.

The ComRes survey showed that the Conservatives’ lead was narrowing from seven to five points in the last month.

It is a second poll in recent days to suggest that Labour could stay the biggest party in the House of Commons, albeit short of a majority.

The survey found that support for the Conservatives was down one point to 37 per cent, while that for labour was p one on 32 per cent.  The Liberal Democrats remained unchanged at 19 per cent.

The margin shows the Tories’ smallest lead in the monthly ComRes survey since December in 2008.

According to Professor John Curtice from Strathclyde University, the figures would give Labour 294 seats, the Tories 277, the Liberal Democrats 46 and others 33.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown could be 32 seats short of an overall majority in a hung parliament.

The poll further cements the recent trend showing Labour gaining ground on the Tories as the election, anticipated to take place on May 6 gets closer.

A survey conducted by YouGov on the weekend fund that the Tories lead had diminished by 2 percentage points, from 37 per cent to 35 per cent.

The ComRes survey was conducted over the phones and included 1005 British adults.  Data was weighted against the past vote recall.
