Labour closing the gap on The Conservatives
by Katie Naylor
A new opinion poll has shown that The Labour Party is closing in on the Conservatives in the lead up to an election.
The ‘poll of polls’ an independent weighted average of polls commissioned by ComRes, ICM, YouGov, Populus and Ipsos Mori has revealed that the lead by the Conservative Party has been reduced to single digits.
The projections show the Conservatives on 39 per cent, down one point form last month, with Labour up by one point on 30 per cent, suggesting that an election, expected by May, could leave no party with a clear majority.
The Liberal Democrats, in third place, could then hold the balance of power, and remained unchanged on 19 percentage points.
The poll came following an ICM survey in a newspaper that showed the Conservatives 14 seats short of a majority in the lower house if the same results are achieved on election day.
It would be the only time since the 1970s that there has been now outright winner in a British election.
It could have a dramatic effect on the road to economic recovery, as analysts believe that legislators would need to be able to take decisive action in tackling the nation’s record budget deficit.
Meanwhile, David Cameron has launched a stinging attack on Prime Minister Gordon Brown over the handling of the expenses issue, urging the PM to institute proper changes to the political system rather than forcing a measure on voting reform.
Mr Cameron will use a speech on political reform to criticise Mr Brown for his ‘cynical’ ploy in calling for a new alternative vote system to replace the first-past-the-post-system.
