Brits wait for repairs for faulty Toyota cars
by Katie Naylor
Auto producer Toyota has been embroiled in a crisis over the recall last night of many of its recent model cars, with owners in the UK waiting for up to two months for emergency repairs.
The car maker is recalling seven models released in the UK, including the best-selling Yaris, after reports that the accelerator pedals were sticking, which meant cars were speeding even though drivers had taken their foot off.
Other affected models include the iQ, Aygo, Auris, Corolla, Avensis and Verso.
It is believed that up to 181,000 drivers of Toyota cars in the UK would not be able to get the pedal fixed until at least Wednesday, when the first small metal pieces required to fix the problem will arrive from Japan.
The company has initiated a damage limitation exercise in order to calm fears over the recall of eight million of its vehicles across the globe.
But the magnitude of the demand at Toyota’s 206 service centres across the country, which will carry out the work, means that thousands of drivers would have to wait weeks to book a slot before the half-hour repair can take place.
Many motorists will be too concerned to use their vehicles until the issue is sorted, and by last night, the auto maker had reported tens of thousands of phone calls from worried drivers.
Last night in the US, safety regulators had commenced a formal investigation into the brake problems on the Prius, one of the world’s best selling hybrid cars.
