Murdered children died of asphyxiation

by Katie Naylor

Police are hoping to commence the questioning of a mother suspected of killing her two young children prior to hiding their bodies in holdalls in the back of her car.

Preliminary results from post-mortem examinations undertaken on the three-year-old Harry and two-year-old Elise Donnison, revealed they had died of asphyxiation, but further tests were needed before the cause of death could be fully determined.

Mother, Fiona Donnison, 43, was arrested after she went to police in a distressed state with what is believed to be self-harm injuries, just before noon on Wednesday.

When police broke into her silver Nissan car, which was located near the former family home in Heathfield, East Sussex, they had found the bodies of Harry and Elise in two large holdalls in the boot.

Autopsies carried out at King’s College Hospital in London yesterday revealed that the children had died less than 24 hours before their bodies were found.

The mother remained in a stable condition at Eastbourne District General Hospital last night.

It has been reported that the children’s father, Paul Donnison, expressed concerns to police about their safety when his estranged wife before they were illed.

A friend of Mr Donnison said that they the couple had been experiencing marital difficulties.   He was informed of his children’s deaths while at work.

Police will not confirm if Mr Donnison had spoken to officers about his estranged wife’s care of the children prior to their deaths, but in a statement, police said they did have previous contact with the couple before Mrs Donnison allegedly murdered her children.
